Gotham Awards took place Monday

Before any winners were announced at Monday’s 22nd edition of the Gotham Awards, one thing became clear: Host Mike Birbiglia will not be in David O. Russell’s next picture.

In his opening monologue, Birbiglia, the writer-director-star of IFC’s “Sleepwalk with Me” (and a nominee for breakthrough actor) roasted Russell.

“The great director Elia Kazan once said you have to get the shot no matter what it takes. David O. Russell once said, ‘I’m just trying to fucking help you, you understand me? I’m just being a fucking collaborator!”

To the Cipriani Wall Street crowd’s delight, Birbiglia finished out Russell’s infamous tirade against Lily Tomlin during the filming of “I Heart Huckabees.”

Later in the evening when the “Silver Linings Playbook” helmer took the stage to accept his career achievement kudo, he steered clear of Birbiglia, but did publicly express interest in working with fellow honoree Matt Damon.

Before the night came to a close, Damon responded to the director’s request during his acceptance speech.

“You’re like a wolf, and I’m like Sarah Palin in a helicopter,” Damon said. “It’s only a matter of time.”
