It looks like TV handyman Carter Oosterhouse can build more than shelves – he’s also building a lasting relationship with actress Amy Smart.

The couple are engaged, Smart’s rep confirms to PEOPLE.

The comely couple began dating last November and were first spotted together in January, with a source telling PEOPLE at the time that they made a good match.

“They have lots of common interests,” the source said. “It’s still pretty new, but they seem to be having a blast together.”

Smart, 35, is known for her roles in The Butterfly Effect and Varsity Blues. Oosterhouse, 34, is best known for his turn as a carpenter on TLC’s Trading Spaces and as host of the home improvement show Carter Can.

Up next for Smart: She stars with Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the romantic comedy 12 Dates of Christmas, which will premiere during ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas in December.
