Sessa could benefit from the inconsistent nomination-showing of Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo at the awards ceremonies

2024 Oscars Predictions:
Best Supporting Actor

Weekly Commentary (Updated Jan. 18, 2024): As said in my BAFTA analysis following the nominations: “The movie landed seven notable noms with the British voting bloc, including among the top five movies recognized for best film. With two acting frontrunners, Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and a viable contender for original screenplay, how could it not be considered an option to upset in the top race? That also could benefit breakout star Dominic Sessa, whose BAFTA nod could signal he’s on his way to recognition.”

At every televised nomination ceremony, we’ve seen different iterations of the men from “Poor Things,” Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo. The Globes nominated them both, SAG chose Dafoe, CCA picked Ruffalo and BAFTA selected neither. I don’t think that’s happened in modern history. The two veteran actors with seven Oscar noms and zero wins are just vote-splitting as they play the same “overdue” narrative. If one does make it, my best guess is Ruffalo.

That could leave room for Sterling K. Brown, who pulled in a timely SAG nom for “American Fiction,” and Sessa, riding the coattails of his two front-running co-stars.

I also wouldn’t count out Matt Damon for “Oppenheimer,” displaying a reverse Tommy Lee Jones when he was shockingly nominated for “In the Valley of Elah” (2007), despite a SAG nod in supporting for “No Country for Old Men.” Perhaps they want to reward his year, including “Air.”
